Bouldering in Valchiavenna Among Granite Boulders and Nature

Valchiavenna

There are climbing disciplines where the mountain is not conquered through height, but through precision, balance and attention to detail. Bouldering is exactly that: a pure form of climbing that transforms boulders and rock blocks into small vertical worlds to be interpreted one movement at a time.

Details

In Valchiavenna, bouldering finds one of its most authentic and scenic settings. Surrounded by meadows, forests, streams and massive granite monoliths scattered throughout the valley, this discipline offers a direct connection with both the rock and the alpine landscape.

Born in the 1970s and rapidly spreading across the world, bouldering consists of tackling short sequences of movements on relatively low-height boulders, generally without ropes but with protective crash pads placed at the base to cushion potential falls. More than height, what matters here is the quality of movement: balance, coordination, strength and concentration become essential for solving short yet often highly complex problems.

Today, Valchiavenna is one of the most appreciated destinations for bouldering thanks to the quality of its granite and the great variety of boulders found throughout the area. Among the most iconic locations are Prestone and Cimaganda, in Valle Spluga between Campodolcino and San Giacomo Filippo. These green environments, crossed by the river and characterised by enormous granite blocks, offer climbing lines for every level, from beginner-friendly problems to highly technical and demanding challenges.

One of the most appreciated aspects of bouldering in Valchiavenna is the variety of difficulties and climbing styles available. Climbers move from technical slab climbing on smooth granite surfaces to dynamic and powerful moves on overhangs and arêtes, creating a constant dialogue between climber and rock. Many boulders also feature lines that remain relatively unexplored, preserving the sense of discovery and exploration that has always defined the discipline.

The relatively moderate altitude of some areas, combined with favourable exposure and the presence of forests and cool air currents, also makes bouldering possible during the summer months, turning the valley into a destination enjoyed throughout much of the year.

Bouldering, however, is not only about technique and performance. It is also deeply connected to sharing and community. Climbers often work together on the same problems, discussing movements, analysing sequences and experiencing the mountains in a spontaneous and collective way. The atmosphere at the foot of the boulders is an integral part of the experience, combining concentration, discussion, silence and moments of conviviality immersed in nature.

In Valchiavenna, bouldering becomes a different way of experiencing the mountains: more essential, closer to the rock and the landscape, where every boulder offers a possible line and every movement becomes a balance between strength, technique and freedom.

Indoor Climbing in Campodolcino, Valle Spluga

Valchiavenna

In Campodolcino, in the heart of Valle Spluga, the Spluga Climbing gym has become a reference point for those who want to discover the world of climbing or train in a modern facility surrounded by the alpine landscape of Valle Spluga.

Details

Located inside the Campodolcino municipal sports centre, Spluga Climbing stands out for its design inspired by natural rock formations, offering a highly immersive technical and visual experience. The facility was designed by architect Enrico Scaramellini, with a concept intended to reproduce shapes, inclinations and volumes inspired by the alpine environment and the natural rock faces of Valle Spluga.

The main wall reaches approximately 18 metres in height and features a variety of angles, volumes and route lines, allowing climbers to practise sport climbing on routes suitable for different levels of experience. The gym offers routes ranging from grade 5a to 7C+, making it suitable both for beginners and experienced climbers. The routes were set by professional route setter Martino Sala, helping to create technical and varied challenges designed for different skill levels. Routes are regularly updated and renewed, ensuring new challenges for both novice and advanced climbers.

The facility includes vertical routes, overhanging sections and areas dedicated to technical training, designed to develop strength, balance, coordination and movement skills. The gym is used both for individual climbing sessions and for courses, training programmes and activities aimed at younger climbers.

Spluga Climbing is also a meeting place for the local climbing community. Athletes, enthusiasts and visitors can share experiences and train in a safe, fully equipped environment, including during winter and when outdoor climbing conditions are limited.

To access the gym, visitors must join the Aquila Azzurra Amateur Sports Association and provide a valid medical certificate. Registration can be completed directly at the Campodolcino municipal sports centre in Via Giavere 4 during opening hours.

Spluga Climbing represents a perfect meeting point between mountain culture and indoor sport: a place where climbers can train, improve and enjoy climbing throughout the year while keeping their eyes on the great alpine walls of Valle Spluga.

Rock Climbing and Free Climbing in Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

Some challenges are faced not only with the body, but also with the mind and spirit. In Valchiavenna, the rock becomes a silent call, a promise of vertical freedom that captivates anyone ready to answer it.

Details

Climbing here is more than a sport; it is a true dialogue with the rock face, an encounter built on strength, balance, technique and concentration, where every hold becomes a choice and every ascent a personal discovery. Free climbing in Valchiavenna traces its roots back to the 1980s, when climbing without artificial aid transformed the way people experienced the mountains, bringing to the valley a new, more essential and authentic spirit closely connected to the alpine environment.

Climbers rely primarily on the strength of their hands and feet, while ropes and protection devices serve as discreet safety tools, leaving movement and technique at the centre of the experience. During this period, Valchiavenna gradually became one of the leading destinations for sport climbing in the Alpine region, thanks to the development of numerous climbing crags located around Chiavenna, Piuro, Val Bregaglia and Valle Spluga.

Among the most historic climbing areas is Sasso Bianco di Prata, considered one of the valley’s earliest climbing sites. Nestled in the forests above Chiavenna, it is appreciated for its technical routes and the quality of its granite. Nearby, the Placche di Bette are renowned for slab climbing, where precision and balance are essential. In the Acquafraggia area, climbing routes develop within a particularly scenic setting among waterfalls, alpine vegetation and water-shaped rock faces.

As free climbing evolved towards a more athletic and physical style, new sectors featuring vertical walls and overhangs began to emerge. This is the case of Sasso del Drago, Vho and Cranna, locations that have become important references for climbers seeking more sustained and demanding routes.

One of Valchiavenna’s greatest strengths is the extraordinary variety of its climbing areas. The territory offers hundreds of equipped routes, sport climbing pitches and longer climbs that allow visitors to experience different styles of climbing, including technical slabs, cracks, vertical walls, overhangs and continuous lines set within constantly changing natural surroundings. The quality of the local granite, compact and highly grippy, is one of the features most appreciated by climbers from Italy and abroad.

The variety of elevations and exposures also allows climbing to be practised during much of the year. Some walls remain sunny even in the colder months, while others, located within forests or cooler environments, provide ideal conditions during summer.

Each climbing sector has its own character, yet all share the same spirit: experiencing the mountains in a direct, essential and authentic way. The silence of the rock face, the breath taken before a difficult move, the concentration required to find the right sequence and the views opening over the valley transform every ascent into something that goes beyond sport itself.

Climbing in Valchiavenna means entering a vertical world of rock, forests, streams and alpine scenery, where technique, freedom and emotion are constantly intertwined. Because here you do not simply climb a wall—you experience a vision of the mountains that remains with you long after returning to the ground.

Snowshoeing in Valchiavenna: Bondeno, Val Febbraro and Lendine

Valchiavenna

Snowshoeing in Valchiavenna offers routes immersed in nature between Bondeno, Val Febbraro and Lendine, with trails suitable for different experience levels and ideal for exploring the snow-covered mountains away from groomed ski slopes.

Details

Valchiavenna offers a variety of snowshoeing routes that extend from the valley floor to higher elevations, providing diverse experiences for those wishing to explore winter landscapes in an authentic natural setting. Among the most notable areas are Bondeno, Val Febbraro and Lendine, each characterised by distinctive scenery and trail features.
One of the most accessible routes is in Bondeno, a flat and open area that is ideal for beginners or those seeking a relaxed snowshoeing excursion. The trail winds through snow-covered meadows and sparse woodland, following a simple and easy-to-navigate route that can be enjoyed safely even with limited experience. Wide-open spaces and good sun exposure make this excursion particularly pleasant and suitable for families.

A different experience is offered by the route connecting Isola and Borghetto through Val Febbraro, a more varied itinerary that follows one of the side valleys of the Valle Spluga. The trail initially follows a snow-covered road before entering a more secluded landscape where forests and open areas alternate along the route.

The ascent is gradual but requires a basic familiarity with walking on snow, especially on the longer sections. The setting is particularly atmospheric, offering beautiful views across the valley and a quieter, more immersive environment than the more frequented areas.

The route to Lendine is among the most panoramic options. Situated above the valley floor, this destination leads to a more open and elevated environment from which visitors can admire the surrounding landscape. The trail passes through woodland and increasingly exposed sections before reaching viewpoints overlooking the mountains of Valchiavenna.

This excursion is best suited to those with some previous experience, particularly when fresh snow or variable conditions are present.

What all these routes have in common is the opportunity to experience the mountains in winter at a slower pace and without the use of ski lifts. Snowshoes make it possible to travel across ungroomed snow, allowing access to natural environments that remain largely untouched throughout the winter season.

From a landscape perspective, these excursions cross forests, side valleys, alpine pastures and open terrain, offering a variety of scenery that changes according to altitude and exposure. This diversity makes each route unique while providing complementary experiences within the same territory.
As with all winter activities in alpine environments, it is important to check snow and weather conditions before setting out. Some routes can be completed independently, while longer itineraries or more challenging conditions may require the support of experienced guides.
Snowshoeing in Valchiavenna offers an accessible and authentic way to discover the region during winter, combining nature, scenery and outdoor activity in a balance between simplicity and exploration.

Homeland Montespluga Outdoor Experiences in Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

Homeland in Valchiavenna is a project dedicated to outdoor experiences in Montespluga, offering guided activities such as snowshoeing, winter hikes and snow adventures designed to help visitors discover the area in an authentic and immersive way.

Details

Within the alpine setting of Valchiavenna, Homeland focuses on direct engagement with the landscape, providing outdoor activities designed to experience the mountains actively and consciously. Its programmes take place mainly in the Montespluga and Valle Spluga areas, environments characterised by open spaces, high-altitude scenery and natural conditions particularly suited to winter activities.

Homeland’s experiences include snowshoe hikes, winter trekking and guided excursions that allow participants to explore the region even during the colder months. Activities are designed for different levels of experience, making the mountains accessible both to first-time visitors and to those already familiar with alpine environments.

One of the project’s distinctive features is its attention to the surrounding landscape. Activities are conceived not only as sporting experiences but also as opportunities to connect with the environment, understand its characteristics and appreciate it more deeply. Excursions take place in wide, largely untouched natural settings where contact with nature is direct and continuous.

The Montespluga area is one of the main focal points of Homeland’s activities. Located at over 1,900 metres above sea level, it offers open landscapes and ideal conditions for travelling across snow-covered terrain, including valleys, plateaus and routes far from groomed ski slopes. This setting creates a quieter and more immersive experience compared to busier ski resorts.

Homeland also stands out for its experiential approach. Activities are often combined with opportunities for sharing experiences, discovering the local area and learning about its natural environment. In this way, each excursion becomes a complete experience that combines movement, observation and knowledge.

The project forms part of the broader range of winter activities available in Valchiavenna, enriching the destination’s offer with an approach focused on exploration and slow travel. Homeland is therefore an ideal choice for those looking for a different way to experience the mountains, away from the more structured dynamics of ski resorts.

Taking part in a Homeland experience means connecting with a more authentic side of Valchiavenna, where the landscape, silence and rhythms of nature become central elements of the activity.

Ski Mountaineering in Valchiavenna and Valle Spluga

Valchiavenna

Ski mountaineering in Valchiavenna, particularly in the Valle Spluga, offers routes of varying difficulty through unspoilt alpine landscapes, ideal for those seeking snow adventures away from groomed ski slopes.

Details

The Valle Spluga is one of the main destinations for ski mountaineering in Valchiavenna, thanks to its extensive and varied terrain characterised by natural slopes perfectly suited to both uphill and downhill travel on skis. The area stretches between Madesimo, Montespluga and the mountain slopes leading towards the Swiss border, providing a wide range of touring opportunities.

One of the defining features of the region is the variety of available routes. There are itineraries suitable for beginners, with moderate elevation gains and gentle gradients, as well as more demanding tours designed for experienced ski mountaineers requiring strong technical and physical preparation.

Most routes cross open slopes, valleys and ridgelines, allowing smooth ascents and wide panoramic descents. In many cases, these itineraries follow historic routes or pass through landscapes traditionally used for alpine grazing, offering an experience that extends beyond the purely sporting aspect.

Alongside backcountry routes, Skiarea Valchiavenna also offers dedicated ski mountaineering experiences on marked slopes. Throughout the season, “Skialp All Day” provides a designated route accessible during ski area opening hours, with descent on open slopes in safer conditions. Once a week, usually on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 10 pm, “Skialp by Night” allows participants to ascend and descend along a dedicated illuminated slopes, offering a unique evening experience in the snowy setting of the Valle Spluga.

Among the most popular areas is Montespluga, where the landscape opens into broad, bright spaces characterised by the presence of the lake of the same name and peaks rising above 3,000 metres. This setting creates a highly immersive experience, with views extending across the surrounding mountains and side valleys.

Ski mountaineering in the Valle Spluga is closely linked to environmental conditions. The absence of groomed slopes and infrastructure requires careful assessment of snowpack stability, weather conditions and avalanche risk. For this reason, adequate preparation is essential, and the support of qualified mountain guides is recommended when necessary.

Another key aspect is the natural environment itself. The Valle Spluga remains a largely unspoilt alpine area where silence and vast open landscapes become an integral part of the experience. Away from ski lifts and crowded slopes, ski mountaineering here takes on a more authentic dimension based on direct contact with the mountains.

Thanks to the combination of varied routes, outstanding scenery and the authenticity of its alpine environment, Valchiavenna remains a leading destination for ski mountaineering enthusiasts seeking a complete experience that combines sport, nature and exploration.

Skiarea Valchiavenna Between Madesimo and Campodolcino

Valchiavenna

Skiarea Valchiavenna, located between Madesimo and Campodolcino, is one of Lombardy’s leading ski resorts, offering more than 40 km of alpine ski slopes and modern facilities that allow visitors to enjoy winter in the mountains through skiing, freeride experiences and spectacular alpine scenery. Cross-country skiing is also available on dedicated trails located throughout the Valle Spluga, suitable for different levels of experience.

Details

Situated in the heart of the Valle Spluga, the ski area extends across the resorts of Madesimo, Campodolcino and Piuro, creating a well-developed and easily accessible ski system, even from Milan. Thanks to its direct connection to the SS36 road and the absence of motorway tolls, it is one of the quickest snow destinations to reach for a day in the mountains.

The resort features more than 40 km of alpine ski slopes spread across different elevations and environments, from forested areas to high-mountain terrain. The variety of runs makes the area suitable for skiers of all abilities, offering both wide, flowing slopes and more technical, challenging descents.

One of the key elements of the resort is the Sky Express, a modern underground funicular connecting Campodolcino with the Motta ski area in just three minutes, overcoming an elevation gain of more than 600 metres. This infrastructure provides fast and direct access to the slopes, reducing travel times and improving the overall skiing experience.

In recent years, Skiarea Valchiavenna has invested significantly in modernising its facilities. High-speed detachable chairlifts with protective covers, advanced snowmaking systems and modern grooming equipment help maintain high-quality standards throughout the season. Dedicated areas such as the Snow Park further enhance the experience with freestyle features and specially equipped courses.

From a sporting perspective, one of the resort’s most iconic runs is the Canalone, a natural descent approximately 3.5 km long with an elevation drop of more than 1,000 metres. Considered one of the most spectacular runs in the Alps, it is particularly appreciated by experienced skiers seeking an immersive experience in a largely unspoilt alpine environment.

Alongside recreational skiing, the resort also includes slopes approved for international competitions, such as the Montalto FIS slope in the Arlecchino area, which hosts Europa Cup events and other sporting competitions. This makes the ski area an important destination not only for tourism but also for competitive winter sports.

Favourable weather conditions, combined with artificial snowmaking systems, generally allow the ski season to run from late November through to spring. The combination of snow reliability, varied terrain and modern facilities ensures a consistent and enjoyable experience throughout the winter months.

The resort also offers regulated ski mountaineering opportunities on designated slopes. “Skialp All Day” provides a dedicated uphill track available throughout the season during ski area opening hours, with return routes on open slopes in safe conditions. “Skialp by Night”, generally organised once a week (usually on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 10 pm), allows participants to ascend and descend along a dedicated illuminated slope, creating a unique evening experience in the snowy landscape of the Valle Spluga.

Skiarea Valchiavenna also stands out for its integration with the surrounding villages. In Madesimo, visitors can ski directly into the village, combining time on the slopes with breaks in the pedestrian centre and local accommodation facilities.

Exploring Skiarea Valchiavenna means experiencing a complete winter destination where modern infrastructure, varied slopes and outstanding alpine scenery come together to offer a mountain experience suitable for different abilities and styles of enjoyment.

Roman Bridge and The Rabbiosa Gorge in Campodolcino

Valchiavenna

The Roman Bridge and the Rabbiosa Gorge in Valchiavenna form a site of great historical and natural interest in Campodolcino, where an ancient stone bridge overlooks a deep gorge carved by the Rabbiosa stream, offering an experience that combines archaeology and Alpine scenery.

Details

A short distance from Chiavenna, this location represents one of the most striking examples of the meeting between human presence and the power of nature. On one side stands the Roman Bridge, a historic reminder of the routes that crossed the Valle Spluga; on the other is the Rabbiosa Gorge, a dramatic rocky chasm shaped over centuries by flowing water.

Together, these features create a landscape of remarkable character where history and nature coexist in perfect balance.

Built in stone and distinguished by its arched structure, the bridge reflects the historical importance of Valchiavenna as a connection point between Alpine territories. Although traditionally described as Roman, the structure visible today is the result of later reconstructions carried out to maintain this strategic crossing along the valley’s communication routes.

Crossing the bridge today means retracing a route that for centuries facilitated travel, trade and connections between communities. Its location was carefully chosen, allowing passage across an otherwise difficult section of terrain marked by the gorge below.

The Rabbiosa Gorge is the other defining feature of the site. This deep ravine was carved by the Rabbiosa stream, whose waters gradually eroded the rock to create vertical walls, narrow passages and irregular formations.
During periods of high water, the stream flows powerfully through the gorge, clearly demonstrating the erosion processes that continue to shape the landscape.

This natural environment introduces a dynamic and powerful element that contrasts with the stability of the bridge. On one side stands a human-made structure built to endure and connect; on the other, nature remains in constant transformation.

Today, the site can be explored through paths that lead both to the bridge and to viewpoints overlooking the gorge. Safety barriers and equipped walkways allow visitors to enjoy the area while preserving the sense of being immersed in a powerful and largely unaltered natural environment.

From a scenic perspective, the area offers particularly striking views. The contrast between the worked stone of the bridge, the sculpted rock of the gorge and the surrounding vegetation creates a rich landscape that captures the essence of the territory.

The Roman Bridge and the Rabbiosa Gorge therefore represent a place where history and nature meet in a direct and visible way. They are not separate elements but parts of a single system in which human intervention exists within a landscape shaped by ongoing natural forces.

Visiting this site offers an opportunity to understand how Valchiavenna has long been, and continues to be, a place where environment and human presence interact, each contributing to the story of this remarkable territory.

Madonna D’europa in Motta: Panoramic Statue in Valle Spluga

Valchiavenna

Surrounded by the majestic peaks of Valle Spluga, the Statue of the Madonna d’Europa in Motta stands as a symbol of faith and hope, overlooking the landscape with its imposing presence and golden glow. Suspended between sky and mountain, this destination invites visitors on a journey of devotion, nature, and history.

Details

Motta can be reached from Campodolcino via the underground Sky Express funicular railway, or on foot from Madesimo along a scenic trail that leads to the foot of the statue in approximately thirty minutes. Situated at around 2,000 metres above sea level, the site offers sweeping views over the valleys below, framed by forests, rocks, and the pure air of the mountains.

The project was conceived in 1955 by Don Luigi Re, founder of the Casa Alpina di Motta, who wished to erect a monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Thanks to the moral and financial support of the Alpini group from Casatenovo and the work of sculptor Egidio Casagrande, the statue—originally intended for Pizzo Stella—found its final location on the summit of Serenissima, where it was unveiled on 15 October 1957.

Beneath the statue are an altar, a crypt dedicated to European soldiers who died in the last war, and a large staircase facing the Casa Alpina. Don Luigi Re, who died in 1965, is buried here. The statue, inaugurated in 1958 by His Excellency Monsignor Giovanni Battista Montini, is now known as the Virgin of the Peaks and Our Lady of Europe, serving as a landmark for believers and pilgrims from across Europe.

Just a short distance away, Lake Azzurro of Motta, with its clear and vivid waters, completes a landscape of extraordinary beauty, making every visit a memorable experience of spirituality and contemplation.
