VALCHIAVENNA
Val Bregaglia is an Alpine valley divided between two countries: its lower section belongs to Italy, including the municipalities of Piuro and Villa di Chiavenna, while the larger part extends into Switzerland up to the Maloja Pass. This cross-border character makes the valley a natural and cultural link between Italy and the Canton of Graubünden, allowing visitors to move through different traditions and landscapes within the same valley.
On the Italian side, Villa di Chiavenna is the last municipality before the Swiss border and is known for its historic crotti, stone structures dating back in some cases to the 15th and 16th centuries, now restored and preserved. On the Swiss side, the valley is characterised by historic villages and architectural heritage reflecting centuries of Alpine history, with traditional stone houses, mountain settlements and a strong local identity.
The valley can be explored on foot or by bicycle thanks to several itineraries. The Via Bregaglia is a historic and scenic route connecting the Maloja Pass to Chiavenna through trails, mule tracks and forest roads, creating a continuous route across the valley. The Valchiavenna Cycling Route also reaches the Bregaglia area, offering a gentler way to travel between villages, landscapes and riverside scenery.
Val Bregaglia features a remarkable variety of natural environments, from Alpine peaks and glaciers to forests, meadows and valley-floor villages. This diversity makes it suitable both for mountain hikes and more relaxing walks, offering an authentic setting far from mass tourism.
