VALCHIAVENNA
Valle Spluga is an Alpine valley stretching from Chiavenna to the Swiss border and reaching the Splügen Pass at around 2,114 metres above sea level, a historic connection route between Italy and Switzerland. The valley takes its name from the pass itself, which for centuries represented a strategic communication route and a true Alpine gateway between Lombardy and regions beyond the Alps. The ancient viaSpluga route still connects Chiavenna with Switzerland through a historic and scenic itinerary following the paths once used by merchants, travellers and Alpine communities.
This connection with the past remains visible today. The Valle Spluga Ecomuseum, housed within MU.VI.S. in Campodolcino, tells the story of the territory, local traditions, traditional crafts, village life and the development of mountain tourism, with particular attention to the historical importance of the viaSpluga.
The valley offers outdoor and mountain experiences throughout the year. In summer, numerous hiking trails lead to Alpine peaks, mountain lakes, refuges and 17 marked bivouacs, allowing visitors to explore a variety of environments and landscapes. Among the most remarkable places are the Cardinello Gorges.
The area also offers many cycling routes suitable for MTB, e-bikes, downhill and road cycling, including itineraries accessible to families and visitors looking to explore the mountains in an active way.
In winter, Madesimo becomes one of the main snow sports destinations in the valley, with ski slopes, lifts and opportunities for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and ski mountaineering.
The territory includes the municipalities of Campodolcino, Madesimo and San Giacomo Filippo, each with its own historical and cultural identity.
Overall, Valle Spluga offers an authentic Alpine environment where nature, history and mountain life coexist, creating experiences that range from trekking and sports to culture and relaxation.
