Splügen Pass in Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

The Splügen Pass is one of the most iconic Alpine crossings between Italy and Switzerland, a historic and scenic destination in Valchiavenna appreciated by cyclists, motorcyclists and hikers for its winding hairpin bends, dramatic mountain landscapes and deep connection to Alpine history.

Details

Situated at over 2,100 metres above sea level, the pass links Valle Spluga with the Canton of Graubünden, following one of the oldest Alpine crossings between the Mediterranean region and Northern Europe. Since Roman times, this route has played a key role in trade and communication across the Central Alps, maintaining its strategic and cultural importance through the centuries.

Today, the Splügen road is considered one of the most fascinating mountain climbs in the Italian Alps. The modern road, designed by engineer Carlo Donegani and built between 1818 and 1823, predates the famous Stelvio Pass Road by several years and stands as one of the most important examples of Alpine engineering of its time. The Italian side climbs through a long sequence of hairpin bends from Campodolcino to Montespluga and the Swiss border, crossing mountain landscapes that change progressively with altitude.

One of the route’s defining features is the scenery that accompanies the ascent. Forests, mountain pastures, open valleys and high-altitude environments alternate along the road, offering spectacular views across Valle Spluga and the surrounding peaks.

For cyclists, the Splügen Pass is a particularly popular destination. The climb is long and consistent, featuring challenging but regular gradients, while the scenery makes it one of the most iconic road cycling experiences in Lombardy and Valchiavenna. Over the years, the pass has also featured in major international races such as the Giro d’Italia, Giro d’Italia U23 and Tour de Suisse, confirming its status as a landmark climb in Alpine cycling.

Along the route, visitors can also observe historical structures linked to Alpine transport, including avalanche protection galleries and nineteenth-century constructions dating back to the creation of the modern road designed by Carlo Donegani. These elements highlight the historical importance of the pass and the effort required to maintain a connection through the mountains.

Near the summit, the landscape becomes distinctly Alpine. The high altitude, the presence of Lake Montespluga and the open environment dominated by rock formations and mountain meadows create a particularly striking setting, especially during the summer months.

Today, the Splügen Pass remains one of the most symbolic places in Valle Spluga and Valchiavenna, crossed each year by travellers, sports enthusiasts and mountain lovers who choose this route to experience one of the great Alpine landscapes between Italy and Switzerland.

Made Bike Park is also connected to a wider network of MTB routes across Valchiavenna, linking with panoramic itineraries, single tracks and mountain biking routes between Madesimo, Campodolcino and Valle Spluga. ViaSpluga Between Valchiavenna and Switzerland

Valchiavenna

The ViaSpluga is one of the most important historical and hiking routes in the Alps, a trail of approximately 70 km connecting Thusis in Switzerland to Chiavenna through Valle Spluga and Valchiavenna. Crossing alpine passes, historic villages and remarkable mountain landscapes, it is now also available through organised trekking packages with dedicated services designed to make the experience accessible and enjoyable.

Details

The ViaSpluga follows an ancient communication route that has been used since Roman times to cross the Alps and connect Northern Europe with Italy. Today, the trail still preserves much of its original character, following historic mule tracks, alpine roads and paths shaped over centuries by merchants, pilgrims and travellers.

The route stretches between Switzerland and Valchiavenna, passing through a wide variety of environments. From the dramatic Viamala Gorge to the alpine scenery of the Splügen Pass and the descent towards Chiavenna, hikers experience a constantly changing landscape of mountains, waterways, pastures and small settlements.

One of the most significant points along the route is the Splügen Pass, located at over 2,100 metres above sea level. For centuries, this mountain pass has been one of the main crossings through the Central Alps and still preserves historic evidence of alpine transport routes, including the nineteenth-century avalanche gallery built along the Splügen road.

On the Italian side, the ViaSpluga passes through villages such as Montespluga, Isola and Campodolcino, following Valle Spluga down to Chiavenna. Along this section, the landscape gradually changes from high-altitude alpine environments to greener valley settings with forests, meadows and historical traces of mountain life.

The ViaSpluga is not only a hiking route but also a cultural journey that tells the story of trade and travel across the Alps. For centuries, caravans, pack animals and merchants crossed these mountain roads, transporting goods between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

Today, the trail is divided into several stages and can be completed either in its entirety or through selected sections. Organised trekking packages are available and may include accommodation, luggage transport, informational material and logistical support, allowing visitors to enjoy the journey comfortably and fully immersed in the landscape. Signposted routes, accommodation facilities and services along the way make the ViaSpluga suitable for both experienced hikers and those approaching alpine long-distance trails for the first time.

Combining high-altitude scenery, alpine history and dedicated trekking services, the ViaSpluga offers one of the most complete ways to discover Valchiavenna and the Alps. Walking the ViaSpluga means travelling along one of Europe’s oldest alpine corridors, following a route where history, nature and culture continue to coexist along paths that tell the story of the connection between Valchiavenna and the wider Alpine world.

Acqua Merla in Campodolcino

Valchiavenna

Acqua Merla in Campodolcino is one of the best-known places in Valle Spluga, a large green park where nature, water games, and local traditions come together to create an ideal setting for families, children, and relaxing moments in Valchiavenna.

Details

Just a short walk from the centre of Campodolcino, near the Liro stream and along the road leading towards Starleggia and Splughetta, lies Acqua Merla, a wide green meadow that has become one of the symbols of summer in Valle Spluga. Popular with both residents and holidaymakers across generations, it remains a gathering place where people can enjoy nature, games, and relaxation outdoors.

The site takes its name from the nearby oligomineral spring that emerges in the upper part of the park and has long been known for the quality of its water. Over the years, however, Acqua Merla has become especially famous for its “serpentone”, a long water channel running through the meadow where marbles travel along curves, small tunnels, and gentle slopes, entertaining children and adults alike.

This watercourse remains one of the park’s most distinctive features. Marbles, once made of iron or glass and now often replaced by colourful balls, are released into the channel and carried by the flowing water to the finish point, turning the meadow into a shared recreational space.

The atmosphere of Acqua Merla changes throughout the day while maintaining its simple and family-friendly character. During summer, the meadow fills with families, children, groups of friends, and visitors who choose this location to relax in the sun, enjoy a picnic, or spend time immersed in the alpine landscape of Valle Spluga.

The presence of green spaces, play areas, open grounds, and refreshment facilities makes the park particularly suitable for families with young children. Nearby visitors will also find the Acqua Merla kiosk, a campsite, a horse-riding area, and connections to several hiking routes in the region, including sections of the Via Spluga and the Via dei Lamponi.

From a landscape perspective, Acqua Merla is set within a classic Alpine environment surrounded by mountains, forests, and meadows, creating a peaceful setting particularly suited to outdoor activities during the summer season.

Today, Acqua Merla remains one of Campodolcino’s most recognisable and popular destinations, combining nature, local memories, and a welcoming atmosphere in a place that has accompanied summer life in Valle Spluga for decades.

Caurga della Rabbiosa in Campodolcino

Valchiavenna

The Caurga della Rabbiosa in Campodolcino, Valle Spluga, is one of the most remarkable natural sites in Valchiavenna. Recognised as a Regional Natural Monument, it showcases the power of water erosion, which over time has carved a deep rocky gorge and created a spectacular landscape where nature and Alpine history meet.

Details

Located in the municipality of Campodolcino, in the heart of Valle Spluga, the Caurga della Rabbiosa is one of the most striking examples of how water has shaped the Alpine landscape. Over the centuries, the Rabbiosa stream has carved a narrow gorge into the rock, creating vertical walls, natural cavities and deep incisions that make this site particularly impressive from both a geological and scenic perspective.

The gorge extends through a natural environment characterised by smooth rock surfaces, narrow passages and constantly changing water features whose appearance varies according to the seasons and the stream’s flow. Observing the gorge and its rock walls offers a clear understanding of the natural forces that have shaped this Alpine environment over thousands of years, creating a setting that is both dramatic and deeply connected to the nature of Valle Spluga.

One of the most distinctive features of the site is the Roman Bridge, a stone arch bridge that spans the gorge and connects the two sides of the stream. Although of ancient origin, the bridge was rebuilt at the end of the seventeenth century, and bears witness to the historical importance of Alpine routes crossing Valle Spluga.

The contrast between this human-made structure and the power of nature is one of the most fascinating aspects of the visit. On one side stands the bridge, symbolising passage and continuity; on the other, the gorge, continuously shaped by water and still evolving today.

The area can be explored via an equipped circular trail and a viewing platform that offers a clear view of the gorge’s final waterfall.

From a landscape perspective, the site offers striking scenery where the grey tones of the rock contrast with the green of Alpine vegetation and the white water flowing through the gorge. The interaction between natural features and historical elements makes this one of the most distinctive places in Valle Spluga.

Today, the Caurga della Rabbiosa is one of the most interesting destinations for visitors wishing to discover the geological and natural heritage of Valchiavenna, in an environment where water, stone and history coexist within a landscape of remarkable Alpine beauty.

Violino Di Capra: An Ancient Flavour of Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

Among the mountains of Valchiavenna, an ancient gastronomic tradition tells the story of the simplicity and resilience of alpine culture: Violino di Capra. Its curious and poetic name conceals a unique product, born from ingenuity and respect for nature.
Its origins lie in the Valle Spluga, where the harsh climate and unspoilt environment favour a slow and authentic production process. Today, this speciality can be found throughout Valchiavenna while preserving its strong mountain identity.

Details

Violino di Capra is made from the shoulder or leg of locally raised goats that graze in a semi-wild environment among pastures and woodlands, feeding on herbs and wild plants. After preparation, the meat is cured in brine and flavoured with garlic, natural spices and red wine, creating a balance of flavours rooted in tradition.
The ageing process takes place slowly over several months, preferably in the traditional crotti of Valchiavenna, where the natural sorel airflow provides ideal temperature and humidity conditions.
The result is a product with an intense flavour and distinctive texture, typically weighing between 1.5 and 3 kilograms.

The name Violino di Capra was coined in 1930 by poet Giovanni Bertacchi, inspired by the traditional way it is sliced: held beneath the chin with one hand and cut with a knife in the other, as if it were a musical instrument being played.

Served whole and sliced at the table, Violino di Capra becomes the centrepiece of any gathering, especially when shared among friends in a crotto, accompanied by a good glass of wine. Its flavour represents not only gastronomy, but also the living memory of the mountains.

Ice Climbing in Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

There is a moment, in the silence of winter, when water stops flowing and turns into pure wonder. This is how ice waterfalls are born: alive, ever-changing, shaped by cold and time. Every ascent becomes an encounter with nature at its most authentic—a dialogue built on respect, awareness and emotion.

Details

Valchiavenna, and particularly the Valle Spluga, is one of the leading destinations for ice climbing in the Lombardy Alps. Climatic conditions, shaded rock faces and the many waterfalls that freeze during winter create ideal conditions for ice formations of varying difficulty, attracting enthusiasts and mountaineers from across Italy and beyond.

Water is the true protagonist of this sport. In summer it rushes through the mountains; in winter it freezes into ever-changing shapes that evolve from year to year and even week to week. Beneath the surface, the flow continues, sculpting extraordinary structures: columns, icicles, cavities, transparent layers and colours that resemble works of art.

Ice climbing is about freedom. No ascent is ever the same as the one before. Each climb requires interpreting the waterfall, choosing the best line, identifying protection points and reading the signals nature provides. Ice climbers learn to listen to the ice—its sounds, its strength and its delicate balance.

Using ice axes and crampons, climbers move carefully, seeking to preserve these ephemeral sculptures created by winter. Success depends not on strength alone, but on technique, experience and observation. This is why mountain guides play such an important role: teaching the correct techniques, safety procedures and respect for the environment. Ice waterfalls should always be approached with proper preparation, and for those unfamiliar with the area or new to the discipline, the support of experienced alpine guides is highly recommended.

Water, ice, rock and silence awaken deep sensations, often forgotten.

Ice climbing is never a mechanical act. It is interpretation, adaptation and pure emotion. It places us face to face with the power of nature, making us feel small yet incredibly alive.

Splugapark Adventure in Campodolcino, Valle Spluga

Valchiavenna

Nestled in the heart of Valchiavenna, where woodland landscapes open onto spaces suspended between mountains and sky, there are places where adventure becomes a shared experience of play and discovery.

Details

SplugaPark Adventure is one of them: a park where nature is not simply observed, but experienced firsthand, step by step, along suspended routes and elevated pathways.

Located in Campodolcino, in the Mottala basin between the villages of Fraciscio and Gualdera, the park is set within a natural forest environment and features a variety of aerial adventure courses designed for different age groups and skill levels. Tibetan bridges, suspended walkways, zip lines, ropes, nets and tree-to-tree crossings transform the woodland into a dynamic space where visitors can challenge themselves in complete safety.

One of the most appreciated aspects of SplugaPark is the organisation of its courses according to age, height and difficulty, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience at their own pace. Routes designed for younger children introduce the world of aerial adventure with lower heights and simple obstacles, making them suitable even for children from the age of three when accompanied by an adult. For teenagers and adults, the park offers progressively more technical and challenging courses featuring higher sections, suspended crossings and obstacles that require greater balance, coordination and confidence.

The park includes routes divided by difficulty level, from introductory courses to more adrenaline-filled challenges, enabling both families and adventure enthusiasts to find the experience that best suits them. Some courses are designed for those looking for a fun and scenic activity among the trees, while others incorporate more dynamic and technical elements that increase the sense of adventure and involvement.

Before accessing the courses, every participant receives an introductory briefing from the park staff, covering the use of equipment and the main safety procedures. Harnesses, helmets and continuous safety line systems allow visitors to complete the routes in a protected and controlled environment, making the experience accessible even to first-time participants.

The natural setting itself is an essential part of the experience. SplugaPark is immersed in the forests of Valle Spluga, in an area that is easy to reach yet peaceful and scenic, where direct contact with nature accompanies every moment of the day.

Today, SplugaPark Adventure is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Valchiavenna for families, groups and adventure lovers alike, thanks to an experience that combines sport, fun and nature within a safe and engaging alpine environment.

Because here, visitors do more than cross suspended bridges and walkways among the trees: they experience the mountains from a new perspective, shaped by freedom, discovery and shared enjoyment.
