Valchiavenna Cycle Path

Valchiavenna

The Valchiavenna Cycle Path is one of the main cycling routes in the Province of Sondrio, connecting Lake Como to Valchiavenna through riverside landscapes, historic villages and natural environments framed by mountains, vineyards and waterways. The route was awarded third place at the Italian Green Road Awards among Italy’s most beautiful cycling routes, recognising its scenic and cycling tourism value.

Details

Running along the valley floor and following the course of the Mera River, the Valchiavenna Cycle Path offers one of the most accessible and immersive ways to explore the territory between Lake Como and Chiavenna. The route crosses a variety of natural settings, alternating river sections, green areas, small villages and alpine views for much of its length.

The itinerary is suitable for experienced cyclists as well as families and visitors looking to enjoy the valley at a slower pace. Thanks to its predominantly flat and well-connected sections, the cycle path can be comfortably explored without tackling particularly demanding climbs.

One of the route’s defining features is its constant relationship with water. The path follows the Mera River, passes through wetlands and natural areas, and connects landscapes that gradually evolve from lakeside scenery to the alpine environments of Valchiavenna.

Along the way, cyclists encounter villages, bridges, agricultural areas and historical landmarks that reflect the valley’s connection with alpine transport routes. The cycle path is therefore not only an infrastructure for sustainable mobility, but also a route that allows visitors to experience the landscape and identity of the valley up close.

The route is part of a wider cycling network linking Valchiavenna with other itineraries across the Province of Sondrio and the Lake Como area. This allows visitors to extend their experience through connections with MTB routes, panoramic roads and road cycling itineraries.

From a landscape perspective, the cycle path passes through a wide variety of environments, ranging from the open and flat lower valley to areas dominated by mountains and forests, where views gradually open towards the alpine peaks of Valle Spluga and Val Bregaglia.

Today, the Valchiavenna Cycle Path is one of the most appreciated ways to experience the region by bicycle, combining nature, accessibility and the discovery of alpine landscapes along one of the valley’s main corridors.

Alpine Cheeses: The Authentic Flavour of The Mountains

Valchiavenna

In the valleys of Valchiavenna and Valtellina, cheese is far more than food. It is a living expression of mountain pastures, hard work and centuries-old knowledge. Production techniques, still closely linked to mountain life and seasonal rhythms, reflect the identity of these territories.

Details

Traditional dairy cheese is produced in small valley dairies, where milk is carefully transformed into products with distinctive characteristics. Produced between October and May, Latteria cheese may be full-fat or semi-fat. The former is soft and delicate when young, while the latter develops a firmer texture and a more intense, slightly spicy flavour as it matures.
Alongside it, Valtellina Casera is one of the most recognised expressions of local cheesemaking tradition. Originating from historic cooperative dairies, it is produced from partially skimmed cow’s milk using traditional methods, including calf rennet coagulation and slow ageing.

The result is a compact cheese whose colour ranges from white to straw yellow. Its flavour is sweet and delicate at first, gradually developing more intense notes and subtle hints of dried fruit. It is also a key ingredient in iconic regional dishes such as pizzoccheri and sciatt.
At higher elevations, Bitto comes to life, often considered the king of alpine cheeses. Produced during the summer in mountain pastures, it is made from the milk of cows fed exclusively on high-altitude wild herbs, which give the cheese its distinctive aromas and flavours. With ageing, Bitto develops a firmer texture, deeper colour and increasingly complex taste.

Its origins are ancient and closely connected to the history of alpine communities, blending Celtic traditions with farming practices passed down through generations. Bitto remains one of the symbols of alpine cheesemaking because its production is still deeply linked to mountain pastures, high-altitude processing and seasonal mountain life. Production takes place only during the summer months directly in alpine huts, using freshly milked milk processed according to centuries-old methods. This strong connection to its territory, combined with its remarkable ageing potential, has made Bitto one of the most prestigious historic cheeses of the Alpine region.
Among the most delicate and authentic flavours are goat cheeses such as mascarpin. These small, fresh ricotta-style cheeses become richer in flavour during the summer when produced from the milk of goats grazing in alpine pastures. Often smoked to improve preservation, they develop a golden colour and a distinctive aroma that is both simple and irresistible.

These products can be discovered and tasted throughout the region in agritourism farms, alpine huts, local farms and crotti across Valchiavenna and Valtellina, where cheesemaking traditions remain an integral part of alpine culture and local gastronomy.

These cheeses embody the spirit of the mountains: the pastures, the ancient skills of cheesemakers and a flavour that continues to express the authenticity of nature.

P. Biasini via Ferrata at Sench Di Dalò, Chiavenna

Valchiavenna

When the mountains stop being just a backdrop, they become a living presence to be crossed with respect and determination. Via ferrata belong to this dimension: a way of climbing vertically where excitement and safety meet along the route.

Details

These itineraries are equipped with steel cables, ladders, walkways and suspension bridges that allow hikers to tackle rocky walls even without being expert mountaineers. The rock thus opens up to new possibilities while retaining its wild character.

To enjoy these routes safely, specific equipment is essential: a helmet, harness with via ferrata set and energy absorber, gloves and trekking boots. These are indispensable tools that accompany every movement along the wall.

The P. Biasini Via Ferrata at Sench di Dalò is one of the most intense experiences in the area. It develops on the rock face overlooking the town of Chiavenna, in a setting that dominates the surrounding landscape with both grandeur and beauty. Known as the “Sench di Dalò”, the route is long and demanding, designed for those with good fitness levels who wish to challenge themselves.

The route starts near Pianazzola and follows a circular itinerary, returning to the starting point after a complete journey through ascent, panoramic views and physical effort.

The overall commitment is approximately four and a half hours, a period that unfolds between concentration and wonder as the rock accompanies every step upward.

And like every great climb, this one ends in the most authentic way: with a snack at a local crotto, where the effort fades away and only the satisfaction of having completed the challenge remains.

Gianni Succetti via Ferrata in Mese, Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

There are ways of experiencing the mountains that go beyond admiring them from below, inviting you to enter them step by step, suspended between rock and sky. Via ferrata embody this spirit: a bridge between adventure and safety, excitement and awareness.

Details

Via ferrata are protected routes equipped with steel cables, rungs, ladders and secured passages that allow hikers to tackle rock faces and exposed sections without advanced mountaineering skills. Thanks to these installations, the mountains become accessible to those wishing to approach the vertical world gradually while still enjoying a deep immersion in the alpine environment.

To undertake these routes safely, it is essential to use proper equipment—including a helmet, harness, via ferrata set with energy absorber, gloves and suitable footwear—and to assess personal fitness and experience levels. Beginners are advised to rely on Alpine Guides, who can accompany the excursion and teach the correct progression and safety techniques.

Among the best-known routes in Valchiavenna is the Gianni Succetti Via Ferrata, located above the village of Mese on the slopes overlooking the entrance to the valley. The route develops along the so-called Parete di Mese, a granite wall highly appreciated by climbers, offering a varied and panoramic itinerary featuring vertical sections, ledges and more athletic passages.

The via ferrata is considered moderately difficult and is ideal for those seeking a structured first experience without giving up exciting sections. The route mainly follows compact granite rock, enjoys excellent sun exposure and gradually opens up views over the Chiavenna plain, Lower Val Bregaglia and the surrounding mountains.

One of the most distinctive features of the itinerary is the continuity of the ascent. The route alternates rather vertical protected sections with easier stretches, creating a dynamic and varied progression. In some places the via ferrata follows smooth granite slabs, while in others it crosses rocky steps and particularly scenic panoramic passages.

Access is convenient from Mese via a short woodland path, while the return follows a mule track and easier trails leading pleasantly back down to the valley. The overall duration of the excursion is relatively short—generally around three hours—making it suitable even for a half-day outdoor adventure.

The Gianni Succetti Via Ferrata offers one of the most engaging ways to experience the vertical dimension of Valchiavenna: an adventure that combines adrenaline, scenery and discovery of the alpine territory, leaving visitors with that sense of freedom that only the mountains can provide.

Canyoning in Val Bodengo Among Gorges, Water and Adventure

Valchiavenna

Sometimes nature does not simply invite observation—it calls you to experience it directly. Val Bodengo is one of those places: one of Europe’s best-known natural canyons, where water shapes the rock and every descent becomes an experience of adventure, discovery and direct contact with the alpine environment.

Details

Through the activities organised by Valbodengo Adventures and Canyoning Val Bodengo, visitors can tackle canyoning routes suitable for different levels of experience, accompanied by expert guides and specialised equipment. The Bodengo stream offers progressive itineraries designed both for beginners and for those looking for more technical and adrenaline-filled descents.

Among the most accessible routes is Bodengo 1, ideal for beginners, families and groups seeking a safe introduction to canyoning. The route combines small jumps, natural slides and short abseils, allowing participants to become familiar with both the water and the canyon environment in a gradual and enjoyable way.

For those seeking a more dynamic experience, Bodengo 2 is one of the valley’s most popular routes. Here the descent becomes more varied and engaging, featuring waterfalls, natural toboggans, rope descents and passages carved into the rock by the constant action of water. It is an itinerary that combines technique, fun and complete immersion in nature.

Bodengo 3 is designed for participants who already have experience or wish to undertake a more demanding descent. In this section the canyon becomes narrower and more spectacular, with technical passages, higher abseils and particularly scenic environments that make the experience intense and exciting.

In addition to the classic routes, activities are also organised for groups, team-building events, bachelor parties, customised outdoor experiences and combinations with other sports activities available in Valchiavenna, allowing visitors to experience the territory in an even more active and engaging way.

Sliding along water-polished rock walls, diving into natural pools and crossing gorges shaped over centuries offers direct contact with an authentic mountain environment where nature, movement and emotion merge continuously.

Val Bodengo is not only a canyoning destination but also a place for immersive experiences among water, rock and adventure, where visitors can choose the route best suited to their abilities and discover one of the most spectacular natural environments in Valchiavenna.
