KV Chiavenna-Lagùnc and Val Bregaglia Trail 2026: a weekend of mountain running between Italy and Switzerland

On 17 and 18 October 2026, Chiavenna will welcome some of the biggest names in trail running and mountain running, with two events that attract international athletes and running enthusiasts from across Europe every year:

the Kilometro Verticale Chiavenna-Lagùnc, now in its 27th edition, and the Val Bregaglia Trail, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Two races, one unforgettable weekend dedicated to everyone who loves running along historic trails, mule tracks and spectacular mountain landscapes stretching between Valchiavenna and Switzerland.

Saturday 17 October: the KV Chiavenna-Lagunc, the “race of records”

The challenge starts at the Loreto church, at an altitude of 352 metres, and climbs all the way to the Lagunc mountain pasture, at 1,352 metres. The course covers 3.3 kilometres with 1,000 metres of elevation gain, entirely uphill, following mule tracks and natural mountain trails.

The route includes historic paths such as the Pianazzola mule track and is officially certified by FIDAL and World Athletics. Among mountain running specialists, it is known as the “race of records”: over the years, it has welcomed champions such as Marco De Gasperi, Jonathan Wyatt and Henri Aymonod, all taking on a time trial that pushes even the fittest athletes to their limits.

Born from the Trofeo Amici Madonna della Neve Lagùnc in 1986, the Kilometro Verticale has grown into one of the most prestigious events on the Italian and international mountain running calendar.

Sunday 18 October: the Val Bregaglia Trail, along smugglers’ trails and a new relay challenge

The following day, the action crosses the border. The Val Bregaglia Trail runs between Italy and Switzerland, following ancient paths once used by smugglers and winding through forests and spectacular landscapes connecting Promontogno and Chiavenna.

This year, runners can choose between two challenges:

the main 25 km trail, featuring 1,050 metres of elevation gain and 1,000 metres of descent, for those looking to take on the classic trail distance;
the Italian Mountain Running Relay Championships, a new feature for the 2026 edition, bringing Italy’s top mountain running teams to Chiavenna for a fast-paced and highly competitive race.

The Val Bregaglia Trail is part of the ITRA National League calendar, confirming its international appeal and the technical quality of its course.

Together, the two races, both organised by ASD Amici Madonna della Neve Lagunc, create a true mountain running festival, bringing elite athletes and amateur runners, families and trail running enthusiasts to Chiavenna.

Set between the peaks of Valchiavenna and the Swiss border, the area once again proves to be the perfect setting for outdoor sports, combining challenging mountain trails with spectacular natural scenery.

Whether you want to take on one of the most iconic uphill challenges in the Lombardy Alps or follow the historic border trails of the Val Bregaglia Trail, Chiavenna is waiting for you on 17 and 18 October 2026 for two days of sport, nature and challenges to be experienced right to the very last breath.

Hall of the Zodiac at Palazzo Vertemate Franchi

Valchiavenna

The Hall of the Zodiac is one of the most representative rooms of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi and one of the finest examples of the decorative programme that enriches the residence. Located on the top floor of the palace, it overlooks the landscapes of Val Bregaglia, Chiavenna and the surrounding chestnut groves, creating a continuous dialogue between the interiors of the residence and the territory beyond.

Details

The room stands out for the richness of its decoration. The walls are entirely covered with frescoes, while the ceiling is enhanced by a magnificent carved wooden covering, regarded as one of the artistic masterpieces of the palace. The large central coffer, distinguished by its refined interplay of carving and volume, is dominated by the figure of Fame, while the side panels depict Venus riding a chariot drawn by swans.

The room takes its name from the iconographic representations of the twelve zodiac signs, each depicted through its traditional symbol: animals, human figures or mythological creatures. Beneath each zodiac sign, the corresponding month is represented by male figures illustrating the principal agricultural activities of rural life, from work in the vineyards and the grain harvest to the grape harvest, chestnut gathering and the seasonal tasks of winter.

The painted decoration is also distinguished by numerous scenes inspired by classical mythology. The frescoes depict episodes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, featuring figures such as Glaucus and Scylla, Tantalus and Pelops, Circe, Latona, Niobe, King Midas and Atalanta, within an elaborate decorative programme combining symbolic references, mythological narratives and elements of Renaissance humanist culture.

The quality of the frescoes has long been recognised by scholars, who have highlighted their vibrant colours, refined execution and careful use of relief effects, making the Hall of the Zodiac one of the most outstanding decorative spaces within the entire residence.

The fame of this room extended beyond the Valchiavenna as early as the beginning of the twentieth century. For the International Exhibition held in Rome in 1911, the hall was faithfully reproduced, with the permission of the owners, as one of the most significant expressions of Lombard art. This recognition bears witness to the historical and artistic importance of one of the most fascinating spaces within Palazzo Vertemate Franchi.

Entrance Hall of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi: Deities, Symbols and the Four Elements

Valchiavenna

The entrance hall of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi is one of the most evocative spaces within the Renaissance residence in Prosto di Piuro. Passing through the rusticated portal, visitors enter a space that immediately impresses with the richness of its decoration and the symbolic significance of its painted programme, conceived to celebrate the harmony between mankind, nature and the universe.

Details

The hall opens beneath a vaulted ceiling decorated with elegant geometric and floral motifs, while the walls are articulated by allegorical figures and deities from the classical world. Hercules, Neptune, Saturn and Vulcan are depicted as representations of the four fundamental elements: air, water, earth and fire. The choice of this theme is far from accidental, reflecting the humanist culture of the Vertemate Franchi family and their intention to transform the villa’s entrance into a place rich in philosophical and symbolic meaning.

The deities are set within a decorative scheme rich in detail that interacts harmoniously with the architecture of the space. Visitors are welcomed into an environment that serves not merely as a passage to the interior rooms, but as a true introduction to the artistic and cultural world of the residence.

Over time, scholars have devoted particular attention to this room, seeking to interpret the meaning of its figures and identify the artists responsible for the decoration. Today, the frescoes are generally attributed to painters from the Valsolda area, confirming the artistic value of the palace’s entire decorative cycle.

The entrance hall also preserves important historical evidence connected with the visitors who passed through the villa in the centuries that followed. Numerous inscriptions, including one dated 1619, can still be read on the walls, recalling the long history of this place and the fascination it has held for generations of travellers.

Observing the entrance hall of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi means reading a true manifesto of Renaissance culture: a space where art, mythology and symbolism come together to express the worldview of one of the most important families in the Valchiavenna.

The Rooms of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi: Frescoes and Wooden Ceilings

Valchiavenna

Entering Palazzo Vertemate Franchi means discovering a residence where every room reflects the refined taste of the family who built it during the second half of the sixteenth century. The interiors still preserve an extraordinary heritage of decorations, wooden ceilings and painted cycles that accompany visitors on a journey through art and history.

Details

Passing through the entrance portal, visitors arrive in the entrance hall, one of the palace’s most spectacular spaces. Here, the contrast between the restrained exterior and the richness of the interior decoration immediately reveals the elegance of the residence. The walls depict Hercules, Neptune, Saturn and Vulcan, interpreted as allegories of the four elements: air, water, earth and fire.

The rooms on the raised ground floor are distinguished by vaulted ceilings, while those on the upper floors feature elegant decorated wooden ceilings. All the rooms are arranged along a central corridor and communicate with one another, reflecting the Renaissance concept of residential design.

Among the most representative interiors are the Room of Juno, clad in inlaid wood, the Room of Mercury and Jupiter, and the Hall of the Zodiac, where the zodiac signs are paired with the agricultural activities of each month, illustrating the deep connection between the Vertemate Franchi family and the surrounding territory.

The attribution of the frescoes has been the subject of numerous studies over time. Following several hypotheses proposed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the decorations are now generally attributed to artists from the Valsolda area, confirming the artistic value of the palace’s entire painted cycle.

Visiting the rooms of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi means immersing yourself in a journey where painting, carved wood and Renaissance symbolism reveal the culture and prestige of one of the most important historic residences in the Valchiavenna.

Wine Press and Ice House of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi: The Agricultural Buildings

Valchiavenna

Beyond the noble rooms of the residence, Palazzo Vertemate Franchi preserves a remarkable collection of agricultural buildings that tell the story of everyday life at the villa and the family's relationship with the surrounding territory. Among the most significant are the wine press, the ice house and the structures that once supported the estate's productive activities.

Details

The eastern side of the complex is home to the rural area, where buildings once used for managing the agricultural estate can still be seen. Some of these structures even predate the construction of the palace, bearing witness to the site’s long-standing rural vocation.

Among the most important features is the screw wine press, used for processing grapes. Compared with the older beam presses traditionally found throughout the Valchiavenna, it represents a more advanced type of press and documents the evolution of local winemaking techniques.

Beside the wine press stands the ice house, an ingenious system used to preserve food throughout the year. Snow and ice collected during the winter were stored inside a deep cylindrical chamber, while the side niches connected to the central cavity were used to keep food cool for long-term preservation.

Among the structures associated with the chestnut grove were also the drying house, used for drying chestnuts, and the still employed to produce grappa from grape pomace. Together, these buildings show that Palazzo Vertemate Franchi was not only an elegant residence but also the centre of a complex agricultural system fully integrated with the landscape of the Valchiavenna.

Visiting the agricultural buildings of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi offers the opportunity to discover a lesser-known aspect of the estate, where traditional tools, preservation techniques and farming activities tell the story of everyday life in this great Renaissance residence.

Gardens of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi: The Historic Gardens of the Villa

Valchiavenna

The gardens of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi are one of the most distinctive features of the entire monumental complex in Prosto di Piuro. Designed as an integral part of the Renaissance residence, they still preserve the original relationship between architecture, landscape and agricultural activity that characterised the history of the Vertemate Franchi family.

Details

The outdoor route first leads visitors to the Italian garden, laid out according to a geometric design and enhanced by the ornamental fish pond with its double exedra balustrade. At the centre stands a fountain featuring the statue of Hercules, while the wall facing the road still preserves traces of the original frescoes dedicated to water and the sea.

Descending from the garden, visitors reach the large orchard, which offers a striking view of the western façade of the palace, framed by the small church and the mountains of the Val Bregaglia. The landscaped grounds also include the vineyard, vegetable gardens and chestnut grove, bearing witness to the agricultural vocation that shaped life at the villa for centuries.

The chestnut grove is one of the most characteristic areas of the estate. From here it is possible to overlook the palace’s northern courtyard, an intimate and shaded space that highlights the harmonious relationship between the building and its natural surroundings.

Visiting the gardens of Palazzo Vertemate Franchi means discovering a historic landscape where nature, cultivation and architecture still coexist according to the original Renaissance design, offering one of the most captivating views in the Valchiavenna.
