KV Chiavenna-Lagùnc and Val Bregaglia Trail 2026: a weekend of mountain running between Italy and Switzerland

On 17 and 18 October 2026, Chiavenna will welcome some of the biggest names in trail running and mountain running, with two events that attract international athletes and running enthusiasts from across Europe every year:

the Kilometro Verticale Chiavenna-Lagùnc, now in its 27th edition, and the Val Bregaglia Trail, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Two races, one unforgettable weekend dedicated to everyone who loves running along historic trails, mule tracks and spectacular mountain landscapes stretching between Valchiavenna and Switzerland.

Saturday 17 October: the KV Chiavenna-Lagunc, the “race of records”

The challenge starts at the Loreto church, at an altitude of 352 metres, and climbs all the way to the Lagunc mountain pasture, at 1,352 metres. The course covers 3.3 kilometres with 1,000 metres of elevation gain, entirely uphill, following mule tracks and natural mountain trails.

The route includes historic paths such as the Pianazzola mule track and is officially certified by FIDAL and World Athletics. Among mountain running specialists, it is known as the “race of records”: over the years, it has welcomed champions such as Marco De Gasperi, Jonathan Wyatt and Henri Aymonod, all taking on a time trial that pushes even the fittest athletes to their limits.

Born from the Trofeo Amici Madonna della Neve Lagùnc in 1986, the Kilometro Verticale has grown into one of the most prestigious events on the Italian and international mountain running calendar.

Sunday 18 October: the Val Bregaglia Trail, along smugglers’ trails and a new relay challenge

The following day, the action crosses the border. The Val Bregaglia Trail runs between Italy and Switzerland, following ancient paths once used by smugglers and winding through forests and spectacular landscapes connecting Promontogno and Chiavenna.

This year, runners can choose between two challenges:

the main 25 km trail, featuring 1,050 metres of elevation gain and 1,000 metres of descent, for those looking to take on the classic trail distance;
the Italian Mountain Running Relay Championships, a new feature for the 2026 edition, bringing Italy’s top mountain running teams to Chiavenna for a fast-paced and highly competitive race.

The Val Bregaglia Trail is part of the ITRA National League calendar, confirming its international appeal and the technical quality of its course.

Together, the two races, both organised by ASD Amici Madonna della Neve Lagunc, create a true mountain running festival, bringing elite athletes and amateur runners, families and trail running enthusiasts to Chiavenna.

Set between the peaks of Valchiavenna and the Swiss border, the area once again proves to be the perfect setting for outdoor sports, combining challenging mountain trails with spectacular natural scenery.

Whether you want to take on one of the most iconic uphill challenges in the Lombardy Alps or follow the historic border trails of the Val Bregaglia Trail, Chiavenna is waiting for you on 17 and 18 October 2026 for two days of sport, nature and challenges to be experienced right to the very last breath.

Di’ de la brisaola

From 3 october 2026 to 4 october 2026

Details

Dì de la Brisaola on October 3 and 4 in Chiavenna

Discover the taste of tradition, an authentic journey through tastings, alpine history, agricultural markets, and music in the heart of the historic centre.

There is a moment, at the beginning of autumn, when the streets of Chiavenna are filled with ancient aromas and a sincere conviviality. On the first weekend of October, the town, already awarded the prestigious titles of “Cittàslow” and “Bandiera Arancione” by the Italian Touring Club, invites you to slow down and discover an original itinerary dedicated to a product born right among these mountains: brisaola.

Do not call it bresaola: here, in the local shops, brisaola retains its ancient name to distinguish itself from the one produced in Valtellina. It is a story rooted in time: as early as the 1400s, tales were told of the production of “carne salada,” a craft closely linked to the “brisa,” the intensely salted bovine gland. A food that embodies the soul of the mountain, the patience of its preparation, and respect for the memory of the territory.

Saturday, October 3: the preview of the Dì de la Brisaola offers a tasty appetizer. From 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, within the historic town courtyards, visitors can discover, taste, and purchase authentic products from local agricultural farms. A wealth of flavours that will find its ideal setting along Viale Matteotti on Sunday.

And as evening approaches, the festival changes its attire: from 6:00 PM on Saturday, the bars in the town centre will host the Aperitivo della Brisaola, a moment of pure sharing where taste meets the joy of being together.

Sunday, October 4, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the village transforms into an open-air stage of flavours. Brisaola can be savoured while strolling through the streets of the centre, in the most evocative and characteristic corners carefully set up by numerous local producers. It is a direct encounter with those who, every day, carry forward this precious artisanal heritage.

To fully live the experience and access the 10 tasting points distributed in the heart of Chiavenna, visitors simply need to purchase a tasting booklet for €5 at one of the dedicated ticket points. With this event, the town prepares to host the most authentic and heartfelt gastronomic festival of the year.

The Dì de la Brisaola is not just about gastronomy; it is a true community celebration that embraces all generations. Sunday is enriched with smiles and discoveries for the little ones, featuring creative workshops and activities, alongside games and special entertainment organized inside the Firefighters’ Museum.

For those who wish to combine food and wine with art, the town’s museums will remain open, accompanied by exclusive exhibitions set up for the occasion. Everything will be rhythmically accompanied by the unmissable and overwhelming musical entertainment of the Guggen Bands, filling the historic centre’s streets with sounds and colours throughout the day.

Savouring brisaola during this weekend means connecting with the truest soul of Chiavenna. It is memory, celebration, and a taste that feels like home.

Lakes Festival (Mario Pirovano)

13 august 2026

Details

Mario Pirovano in *Lu Santu Jullare Francesco*

As part of the Lombardy Lakes Festival, this performance offers an outstanding theatrical and spiritual experience. Mario Pirovano, the renowned actor of Dario Fo and Franca Rame’s theatre company, presents *Lu Santu Jullare Francesco* to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy.

This powerful monologue brings to life a rich gallery of characters from medieval Italy—popes, cardinals, soldiers, peasants and monks—offering a portrait of St. Francis far removed from the traditional hagiographic image: a man of the people, provocative, consistent and ironic, just as the Saint himself liked to describe himself, a “”jester of God.””

An opportunity to experience the great tradition of Italian civic theatre, blending popular satire, medieval storytelling and oral poetry.

Location: Piazza Bertacchi, Chiavenna
