Valchiavenna Cittaslow Tourism Outdoor

Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna is part of the international Cittaslow network, a movement created to promote quality of life, sustainability, local identity and a model of development focused on communities and the environment. Through the town of Chiavenna, the valley belongs to this international network, sharing its values and contributing to the promotion of more conscious, authentic and environmentally respectful tourism.

Details

The Cittaslow network brings together towns that choose to enhance their cultural, landscape, gastronomic and social heritage by promoting a lifestyle based on quality, hospitality and respect for local traditions. Becoming part of this network means sharing a common path focused on sustainability, the protection of local excellence and the enhancement of local communities.

Within this framework, the Cittaslow Tourism Outdoor project was created to promote outdoor tourism. As a long-standing member of the international Cittaslow network, Chiavenna has taken on the role of coordinator of the Cittaslow Tourism Outdoor project, becoming a reference point for other member towns in the field of outdoor tourism. This recognition highlights the work carried out over the years to promote a way of travelling that respects the territory, local communities and the quality of the visitor experience.

The project aims to encourage a form of tourism capable of preserving the spirit of local communities while passing on knowledge of the area’s cultural, environmental and landscape heritage to future generations. Through the Cittaslow model, Valchiavenna promotes development based on respect for traditions, local food production and the identity of its places, placing the relationship between people and the environment at its core.

Within this context, outdoor tourism becomes a way of discovering the valley at a slower pace, following trails, mule tracks, cycle paths and historic routes that cross mountains, villages and alpine landscapes. Walking, cycling and enjoying the open air allow visitors to experience a territory that has preserved its authenticity while enhancing its natural and cultural resources.

One of Valchiavenna’s distinguishing features is its network of routes linking the valley with the neighbouring Swiss valleys and Lake Como, offering a wide variety of experiences for lovers of nature and sustainable mobility. Routes such as the Via Spluga and other alpine trails represent a valuable heritage that helps make the valley an internationally recognised destination for slow tourism.

The Cittaslow Tourism Outdoor project also provides an opportunity to promote local excellence through initiatives, events and activities involving institutions, tourism operators and local communities, supporting a sustainable development model based on quality of life and hospitality.

Discovering Valchiavenna Cittaslow Tourism Outdoor means experiencing a territory where nature, culture and traditions coexist in harmony, offering an authentic experience centred on slow tourism, environmental respect and the discovery of the Alps.

Mamete Prevostini Historic Winery in Mese

Valchiavenna

The Mamete Prevostini Historic Winery is one of the places that best represents wine culture in Valchiavenna, where family history, winemaking tradition and the charm of the crotto reflect an authentic connection with the local area.

Details

Located in Mese, just outside Chiavenna, the Mamete Prevostini Historic Winery preserves the origins of a family business that has been linked to hospitality and wine culture for more than a century. This is where the story of the Prevostini family began, in a place where tradition has been passed down from generation to generation while maintaining a strong connection with Valchiavenna.

At the heart of the winery is the family crotto, a natural cavity in the rock characterised by the constant natural airflow that maintains ideal temperature and humidity throughout the year. This unique environment, a distinctive feature of Valchiavenna’s heritage, is now used to store the finest Mamete Prevostini vintages, preserving the close relationship between nature and wine culture.

The origins of the property date back to the early twentieth century, when the family’s grandparents managed a business producing and serving wine, cured meats, cheeses and other local products. From the very beginning, the crotto became a place of hospitality and conviviality, welcoming both travellers and local residents in a setting deeply rooted in local tradition.

Today, the Historic Winery continues to tell this story through guided tours and tastings that allow visitors to discover the family’s history and enjoy an immersive wine experience. Next to the winery is the Crotasc restaurant, managed by the Prevostini family, which continues the site’s long-standing hospitality tradition in a setting surrounded by chestnut woods.

Today, the Mamete Prevostini Historic Winery is an important destination for anyone wishing to discover Valchiavenna’s wine culture, offering the opportunity to experience a place where history, tradition and local identity continue to coexist.

Raetica Classica: the Cycling Tour through Valchiavenna, Valtellina and Switzerland

Valchiavenna

The Raetica Classica is a circular cycling itinerary connecting Valchiavenna, Valtellina and the Swiss Engadin, offering a journey through Alpine landscapes, historic villages, scenic cycle paths and public transport designed to explore the area sustainably. A route that combines nature, culture and sustainable mobility between two countries in the heart of the Alps.

Details

The Raetica Classica links St. Moritz and the Engadin with Valchiavenna and Valtellina through a circular route that can be travelled by bicycle and integrated with buses and railway lines. The project was created to promote a cross-border area rich in landscapes, traditions and cultural heritage, offering a slow and accessible travel experience.

The itinerary crosses some of the most iconic Alpine landscapes. On the Swiss side, the route passes through the lakes and scenery of the Engadin and Val Bregaglia, while in Italy it follows the Valchiavenna Cycle Path and the Valtellina Trail, two fully paved routes that allow cyclists to ride along the Mera and Adda rivers through villages, vineyards, natural areas and historic centres.

One of the distinctive features of the Raetica Classica is the possibility of combining cycling with public transport. The route can be integrated with the Bernina Red Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and bus services connecting the different valleys, making it possible to tackle more demanding sections and organise the journey over several days.

Along the way, the landscape changes continuously: from the mountains and glaciers of the Engadin to the chestnut woods of Val Bregaglia, before reaching Chiavenna, Lake Como and Valtellina, renowned for its terraced vineyards and food and wine traditions. This variety makes the Raetica Classica an itinerary that brings together very different natural environments within a single journey.

The route can be completed at your own pace, choosing your preferred starting point and dividing the experience into several stages. The availability of cycling services, bike rental points and public transport connections makes the itinerary suitable both for experienced cyclists and for those looking to enjoy a slow travel experience between Italy and Switzerland.

Today, the Raetica Classica is one of the most complete cycling experiences in the Alps, allowing visitors to discover Valchiavenna, Valtellina and the Engadin through a journey of nature, culture, landscapes and sustainable mobility, cycling through the heart of the Alps between two countries.

Chiavenna Orange Flag: Sustainable Tourism, Hospitality and Local Heritage

Valchiavenna

Chiavenna is one of the Lombardy destinations awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club Italiano, the prestigious quality label granted to inland towns and villages that stand out for hospitality, sustainability, heritage conservation and the quality of the visitor experience. This recognition reflects the authentic identity of Valchiavenna and its commitment to increasingly responsible and sustainable tourism.

Details

In the heart of the Alps, between Lake Como, Valle Spluga and Val Bregaglia, Chiavenna is a place where nature, culture and local food traditions exist in perfect balance. These distinctive qualities have led the Touring Club Italiano to repeatedly confirm the Orange Flag award, recognising the town’s high standards of hospitality, landscape conservation and enhancement of local traditions.

The Orange Flag is awarded only to destinations that successfully meet a rigorous evaluation process based on more than 250 criteria covering environmental sustainability, cultural heritage, tourism services, urban quality and the promotion of local products. It is one of Italy’s most important quality recognitions for small inland destinations, identifying places capable of offering authentic, sustainable and people-centred tourism.

In recent years, Chiavenna also became the first destination selected by the Touring Club Italiano for the Touring Eco Program, a sustainable tourism initiative developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Chiavenna and the Valchiavenna Tourism Consortium. The project has involved local authorities, tourism operators, accommodation providers, restaurants and local organisations in training activities, workshops and shared sustainability initiatives.

This programme led to the creation of the Destination Environmental Sustainability Charter and the Tourist Environmental Sustainability Charter, practical tools promoting sustainable mobility, waste reduction, responsible use of natural resources and the enhancement of the local community. The aim is to guide Chiavenna towards an increasingly sustainable tourism model that respects both the Alpine environment and residents’ quality of life.

This sustainable approach is reflected in the visitor experience. Chiavenna encourages travellers to discover the area at a slower pace through hiking trails, cycling routes, historic paths, outdoor experiences and food and wine itineraries that offer direct contact with the valley’s culture. From the traditional crotti to terraced vineyards, from historic Alpine routes to the natural landscapes of Valchiavenna, every element contributes to creating an authentic tourism experience deeply connected to the identity of the area.

The Orange Flag is more than just a tourism award: it represents an ongoing commitment to the quality of the territory and its hospitality. For Chiavenna, it means preserving its history, protecting the Alpine landscape and developing a tourism model that successfully combines sustainability, culture and community wellbeing.

Visiting Chiavenna today means discovering a destination that has chosen to grow while preserving its identity, offering authentic experiences among mountains, history, local flavours and nature. An Alpine town where sustainable tourism is not simply a project, but a genuine way of living and sharing the territory.
