Details

Verceia

A special milestone for the mountains of Valchiavenna: Primalpia Bivouac, located at 1,980 metres above sea level in the upper Ratti Valley, celebrates the 30th anniversary of its opening. Built in 1995 by the Novate Mezzola section of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), the bivouac is still maintained by the same organisation today.

Set in a stunning Alpine landscape and surrounded by peaks such as Pizzo Ligoncio, Cima del Calvo and Monte Spluga, the bivouac has been a landmark for hikers and mountain enthusiasts for the past three decades.

A day of celebration and memories to honour the history of the bivouac and the strong connection between the community of Verceia and the surrounding mountains.

Church of San Guglielmo in Val San Giacomo: Sanctuary on the Via Spluga

Valchiavenna

Along the ancient Via Spluga, surrounded by the alpine landscape of Val San Giacomo, the Church of San Guglielmo is one of the most evocative spiritual and historical landmarks in Valchiavenna. Located in San Giacomo Filippo, the sanctuary stands beside the Liro stream in a peaceful natural setting where faith, art and the mountains have come together for centuries along one of the Alps' main crossing routes.

Details

The church is dedicated to Saint Guglielmo de Orenga, a hermit who lived in the 13th century and chose this secluded place to lead a life of prayer and poverty, living on what nature provided and on alms from travellers. For many years, the saint was mistakenly associated with the French House of Orange, but historical research later traced his origins to the de Orenga family from Menaggio, on Lake Como.

The sanctuary stands on the very site where the saint spent the final years of his life. A first chapel was consecrated in 1327, while the present church was built during the second decade of the 17th century and consecrated in 1637. Originally, the church was connected by a bridge over the Liro stream, which was destroyed by a flood in 1860; today, access is provided by a footbridge located a little further downstream. On the left side of the building stands the bell tower, built in 1737 at the foot of the Lepontine Alps.

The church interior consists of a single spacious nave and preserves numerous artworks dedicated to the devotion of Saint Guglielmo. One of its most significant features is the large wrought-iron gate dating back to 1642, which separates the nave from the presbytery and protects the saint’s relics beneath the main altar. The structure was crafted by the Casanova family of Chiavenna, an important local dynasty of ironworkers.

The sanctuary walls also preserve 17th-century frescoes and paintings depicting the life of Saint Guglielmo. Among them are works by Giovan Battista Macolino, a painter from the valley, who created the frescoes on the counter-façade and several scenes portraying episodes from the saint’s life and the popular devotion of Val San Giacomo.

Particularly striking is the side chapel, which houses a painting depicting Saint Guglielmo and Saint Charles Borromeo kneeling among plague victims while imploring the Virgin Mary. The artwork recalls the plague of 1629–1630, which also affected Valchiavenna and Valle Spluga, making it both a historical and religious testimony.

Next to the church is the cave where, according to tradition, the saint lived as a hermit and where his body remained until the 14th century. Today, this small rock-hewn space retains an especially peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, enriched by a soapstone statue of Saint Guglielmo created in 1784.

Today, the Church of San Guglielmo is one of the most important cultural and religious stops along the Via Spluga and throughout the Valle Spluga area. A place where history, sacred art and the alpine landscape continue to tell the story of the deep bond between spirituality and the mountains, surrounded by the silence and nature of Valchiavenna.

Lake Mezzola: Nature, Outdoor Sports and Relaxation in Valchiavenna

Valchiavenna

Between Lake Como and the mountains of Valchiavenna lies a place where water meets the Alpine landscape, creating a unique environment suspended between Mediterranean nature and mountain scenery. Today, Lake Mezzola is one of Valchiavenna's most attractive destinations for those seeking relaxation, outdoor sports, hiking and holidays immersed in nature, with beaches, charming villages and activities on the water.

Details

Located north of Lake Como, Lake Mezzola stretches between the municipalities of Verceia and Novate Mezzola, surrounded by forests, rocky cliffs and mountains reflected in its waters. The particularly mild climate, influenced by the nearby lake, creates an unusual atmosphere for an Alpine valley, with lush vegetation, natural beaches and landscapes that combine lakeside scenery with mountain views.

In recent years, the lake has become an increasingly popular destination for outdoor tourism and active holidays. Its calm waters provide ideal conditions for kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, rowing and boat excursions, allowing visitors to explore the wilder shores and the area’s most secluded corners.

One of the most distinctive experiences on the lake is the opportunity to reach places that are accessible almost exclusively by water, such as the Tempietto di San Fedelino, considered one of the oldest examples of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Travelling upstream along the mouth of the Mera River, the scenery gradually changes, revealing reed beds, wetlands and particularly striking natural landscapes.

Alongside water sports, the area also offers numerous cycling routes and panoramic itineraries connecting Valchiavenna with Lake Como. The cycle path through Verceia and Novate Mezzola, for example, allows visitors to ride directly along the lakeshore, passing through natural areas, former railway routes and scenic viewpoints overlooking both the lake and the surrounding mountains.

The lake also serves as an ideal starting point for exploring some of the area’s most authentic valleys, such as Val Codera, which can only be reached on foot via historic panoramic mule tracks starting from Novate Mezzola. It is a place that remains deeply connected to mountain life and the slow rhythm of nature.

During the summer season, the shores of Lake Mezzola become one of Valchiavenna’s favourite places for spending time outdoors. Beaches, lawns, green spaces and small lakeside cafés create a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for sunset aperitifs, scenic breaks and peaceful moments immersed in the Alpine landscape.

A holiday on Lake Mezzola offers a different experience from that of Italy’s larger tourist lakes: more intimate, authentic and deeply connected to the natural environment of Valchiavenna. Here, water, mountains and silence come together to create one of the most remarkable landscapes in the Lombardy Alps.

  • Tracciolino in Valchiavenna

    Valchiavenna

The Tracciolino is one of the most spectacular panoramic routes in Valchiavenna, a trail suspended between Val Codera and Val dei Ratti that passes through tunnels carved into the rock, shared cycling and walking paths, and breathtaking views over Lake Mezzola and the surrounding Alpine mountains.

    Details

Built in the 1930s to connect the hydroelectric facilities of Val Codera and Val dei Ratti, the Tracciolino was originally a service railway used by Edison employees travelling along the mountainside. Traces of this industrial past are still visible today, with rails, tunnels and engineering structures lining the route.

The trail extends for several kilometres at an average elevation of around 920 metres and remains almost entirely flat. This feature makes it particularly popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, who can enjoy a spectacular Alpine environment without facing significant elevation changes.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Tracciolino is its continuous interaction with the mountain itself. Much of the route has been carved directly into the rock and passes through a series of tunnels, some narrow and others more spacious, alternating with natural balconies overlooking Lake Mezzola, the northern part of Lake Como and Lower Valchiavenna.

Along the way, visitors encounter striking panoramic viewpoints where the landscape suddenly opens beyond the rock walls, revealing sweeping views of the valley’s rivers, mountains and surrounding scenery. This constant alternation between enclosed passages and wide-open vistas creates a dynamic and highly immersive experience.

The Tracciolino also connects natural environments with small mountain settlements that were historically isolated, including San Giorgio and Codera, villages accessible only by footpaths and hiking routes. This balance between nature and human presence is one of the most distinctive characteristics of the itinerary.

From a hiking perspective, the route is generally considered accessible even for those without advanced technical experience, although caution is required in certain rock-cut sections and tunnels. Appropriate mountain clothing, a flashlight or headlamp, and suitable footwear are therefore recommended.

In recent years, some sections of the route have been affected by safety works and restrictions due to landslides and weather conditions. Parts of the trail are currently accessible, while other sections remain subject to limitations for safety reasons. Visitors are advised to check current access conditions and any route changes with local information offices before setting out.

Today, the Tracciolino remains one of Valchiavenna’s most iconic experiences, combining Alpine landscapes, industrial heritage and mountain engineering along a route that still preserves the original charm of the great works built among these mountains.

Sailing on Lake Como Between Alto Lario and Valchiavenna

    Valchiavenna

On the waters of Lake Como, in the northern area known as Alto Lario, sailing becomes much more than a sport. It is a continuous encounter between wind, light and silence—a different way of experiencing the lake and connecting with its energy.

    Details

Here, natural conditions create an ideal environment for sailing: steady winds, wide open waters and landscapes where mountains alternate with villages overlooking the lake. It is within this setting that sailing finds its most authentic expression, through beginner courses, guided outings and more technical navigation experiences for those who already have experience.

The sailing schools and clubs throughout the area make the sport accessible to everyone, transforming each outing on the water into an opportunity for learning and discovery. It is not only about learning how to handle a sail, but also about understanding the rhythm of the wind and developing a relationship with the water.

Sailing on Lake Como means leaving the shore behind and entering a suspended dimension where time slows down and everything is reduced to the essentials: the sound of the water, the direction of the wind and the course ahead.

Within this delicate balance between nature and movement, sailing becomes an experience that combines technique and contemplation, adrenaline and tranquillity.

Because here, you do not simply sail—you learn how to read the lake and become part of it.
