Piuro Excavation Museum: The Pompeii of The Alps

Valchiavenna

Sometimes the earth preserves a deeper silence. In Piuro, that silence tells the story of a vanished town, destroyed in a single moment yet preserved in the memory of Europe. Known as the Pompeii of the Alps, it stands as a symbol not only of tragedy but also of the enduring power of history to re-emerge through research, discovery and preservation.

Details

The Piuro Excavation Museum, located within the sacristies of the Church of Sant’Abbondio, preserves the remains of a thriving community destroyed on 4 September 1618 by the landslide from Mount Conto. One thousand lives were lost as houses, churches and palaces were buried beneath three million cubic metres of rock and mud. The disaster echoed throughout Europe, as Piuro was an important centre of trade, influential families and international connections.
The museum displays ancient bells—including one cast in 1398—alongside tools, weapons, valuable coins such as examples from the Republic of Venice, pottery, household objects and remains from artisan workshops. Every artefact represents a fragment of interrupted life: spoons, locks, buckles and even the skeleton of a person found frozen in the act of trying to shield themselves from the landslide.
The 53 soapstone water conduits, stretching for more than 51 metres, testify to the hydraulic ingenuity that supplied gardens and noble residences such as Palazzo Vertemate Franchi. Seventeenth-century prints displayed on the walls depict Piuro before and after the catastrophe, turning the visit into a journey between splendour and destruction.
Excavations began shortly after the disaster and resumed in the 20th century thanks to an Italian Swiss committee. They uncovered paved streets, shop walls, precious objects and long-buried memories.
Before the landslide, Piuro was a prosperous settlement rich in churches, stone bridges, decorated palaces, inns and crotti. Afterwards, it became a symbol—not only of human fragility but also of the resilience of memory.
Visiting the museum and archaeological area means walking through a hidden town, listening to what the earth has preserved for centuries and connecting with a story that, though interrupted, still speaks to the heart.
