In Valchiavenna, soapstone is far more than a material: it is a constant presence in the history, craftsmanship and daily life of Alpine communities. It is a variety of serpentine rich in talc and chlorite, characterised by a relatively soft texture and high heat resistance, making it particularly suitable for carving and domestic use.<\/p>\n
Its main extraction areas are located between Chiavenna, Piuro and Val Bregaglia, where the stone was quarried from underground tunnels known as trone, often deep and difficult to access.<\/p>\n
From these quarries, rough blocks were extracted and transformed through a long process of manual craftsmanship into everyday objects, most notably laveggi (lav\u00e9ec), stone cooking pots traditionally used for food preparation.<\/p>\n
The use of soapstone in the valley dates back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence documents its use as early as prehistoric periods, while historical and literary sources confirm its presence during Roman times.<\/p>\n
For centuries, soapstone working was one of the area’s main crafts, contributing significantly to the valley’s economy and reputation far beyond local borders.<\/p>\n
Its popularity stemmed from its remarkable properties. Soapstone absorbs and releases heat slowly, allowing food to cook evenly at low temperatures, making it ideal for stews and braised dishes.

Alongside laveggi, artisans produced cooking slabs known as pi\u00f2te, food storage containers and, more recently, decorative and design objects.<\/p>\n
Soapstone has also left a visible mark on local architecture and art. Baptismal fonts, portals, columns, fountains and decorative details throughout Chiavenna testify to its use in construction and artistic works.<\/p>\n
In this sense, the stone has become an integral part of the urban landscape and a defining element of the area’s visual identity.<\/p>\n
Following a gradual decline during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, caused by the introduction of new materials and industrial techniques, soapstone craftsmanship has experienced a revival thanks to the efforts of a small number of local artisans.<\/p>\n
Among them, the workshop in Piuro is now a key centre for preserving and promoting this tradition, where visitors can observe traditional techniques and discover contemporary products.<\/p>\n
