Fun and games

Fun and games
By Annarosa Parisi

Learning through play, a revolutionary medium, and perhaps even a little “off the wall” is a prime example of divergent thinking, rooted in the principle of using games as a means of education for both mind and body. Even we ski instructors make good use of it nowadays, especially with the more in-depth approach to ski-tutoring for children and the arrival of “school sports grounds”, an area of snow-covered, gently-sloping terrain surrounded by safety nets and usually equipped with a “moving staircase” and specific equipment to encourage the pupil to learn whilst having fun. Any instructor who adopts these techniques will testify that children learn more quickly, but also importantly will retain permanently both technical and non-technical information. And at Madesimo we have the bonus of natural elements which assist us to instruct by toying with the imagination using the relationship between mountains and skiing: the silken groves.

Natural gymkhana represent small paths carved by skis in the snow, amongst beautiful larch and pine woodland, in which the children can zip by along gentle, natural parabola, on humpbacks and short but slanting descents and thus creating a natural, dynamic and fun-packed obstacle course, an entrée to the world of off-piste but essentially to become “in sync” with ones feet and appreciate the fundamentals of balance and centrality. If you ski in Madesimo you’ll soon become aware of small groups of youngsters cavorting around, enjoying themselves midst larch and fir. Take the “Valley of the Witches” a fine example of off-piste and much-loved by mini-skiers all. A short stretch through a little valley where Nature quite simply come into its own. Enormous fun for the kids, with the added stimulus of short searches, or play through skiing over or under logs split apart during storms, or an eager hunt for the “fairy grotto” a tiny natural house invariably hidden by the snow. I may be a young Ski Instructor with a mere 8 years experience under my belt, but I believe I can shout loud and long that adopting recreational learning helps to create within the child one of the most important factors in Life: that of Passion. Whether it be for skiing, snowboarding, mountains or woodland. After all, the primary aim for every parent and teacher is to see a child or pupil who associates, loves and respects the mountains in the first place: the rest - sport et al - can wait a while.
