Cristian Deville talks from our local Skiarea: the base for his Italian National Slalom squad this February. “It’s become our favourite ‘retreat’ for fine-tuning our season’s preparations”, declares the 31 year-old Cavalese who was skiing almost as soon as he could walk. Accountancy studies completed, he became a member of the national team in 1998 and soon established himself.
After a spell on the sidelines due to injury, this season he has returned in great form with splendid results from the USA to Austria’s home of skiing, Kitzbuehel.
“I did have some serious knee problems but with a combination of tenacity, commitment, experience and luck things have come together again,” confirms this genuinely modest young man.
We talk of his success and its impact on skiing in general. “Yes, success at an international level does focus people’s attention, I remember Tomba’s influence, and in other sports too like Valentino Rossi in Moto GP. And we clearly have a fantastic team here who always give of their very best.”And right on cue the team file past on their way to dinner after an intense training day.
“We’re all devoted to Madesimo. In November we enjoyed magnificent hospitality and great conditions.
Skiarea look after us handsomely. Accommodation and catering are first-class. Hence our training becomes a real pleasure. After my native Val di Fassa, I feel very much at home here”.
